In the Mix…A Proper Burial for Books

September 4, 2012

Last week, Dignity Memorial providers Weinstein Funeral Home, Piser Funeral Services and Memorial Park Cemetery sponsored a Geniza ceremony – a Jewish ritual in which used books, clothing and other items are donated by members of the community and buried in a sacred place to benefit both the community and future generations. More than four tons of books and religious material were donated to be buried at the Geniza. The children of Keshet – a leading provider of educational, recreational, vocational and social programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities – also participated in the ritual by assisting with the burial of the donated items. To help promote the Geniza to Chicago’s North Shore community, LCWA secured 22 placements in priority local media outlets.  Calendar listings for the Geniza – as well as post-event coverage – appeared in publications including the Pioneer Press, Chicago Jewish News and Skokie Patch.
